It was Championship Night at Bigby Ice Cube in Ann Arbor as the Master's Hockey League showcased it's top 4 Teams from both the Yzerman and Howe Divisions.
The night started with the Howe Division semi-final matchups, where HomeTech hosted Yazaki, and Guenther Builders hosted McLaren Wealth. HomeTech shutout Yazaki 3-0 on goals from Paul Losey, Todd Dahlberg and Lewis Fulcher III. Greg Medina pitched the shutout for HomeTech. In the other semi-final, McLaren Wealth played a tight game and came out on top 3-1, led by Brad Orr, Mike Dickie and Peter Stone who each scored a goal. Jillian Cook stood strong in net for the winners. In the Championship game, McLaren Wealth jumped out to a 2-1 lead on goals from Orr and Dickie. But Fulcher III was able to tie the game in the 2nd period. The third period was all about HomeTech, scoring 3 unanswered goals; 2 from Steve Vesschemoet, and then an empty-netter from Dahlberg.
In the Yzerman semi-final matchups, Nemco took on Miller Lite in a 1 v 4 matchup. The back-and-forth 1st period led to only a 1-1 tie, with Marc Jacobs scoring for Lite and Steve Beck tallying for Nemco. In the 2nd period, Pete Fogler broke the tie with his goal. Then he and Robert Teixeira capped things off in the 3rd period, as the game ended 4-1, vaulting Nemco to the championship game. In the other semi-final matchup, Dapco took on CCMS. It was all about CCMS in the 1st period as they took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, on goals from Brian Baumhover and Erik Penhollow. Dapco cut the lead in half in the 2nd period on a goal from Janez Krek. The Marty Carrier tied the game for Dapco in the 3rd. But then CCMS defenseman John Dickey took over with back-to-back goals to seal the victory for CCMS.
The Yzerman Championship Game pitted Nemco versus CCMS. Both Teams played tight defense, with the only scoring happening in the 1st period. CCMS got on the board first with a goal from John Brinley. Then Ryan Fawkes tied the game on a breakaway goal. No scoring in the 2nd or 3rd periods, so the game was sent into overtime. Both Teams were nearly out of gas, as all the players had just finished 6 periods of hockey. Overtime remained a defensive battle. But CCMS took an interference penalty late in the 5-minute overtime, and found themselves short-handed at the worst time. However, Nemco ultimately could not penetrate the CCMS penalty kill, and the game was then forced into a shootout. Finally, in the 7th round of shooters, John Zissis scored the game winning goal for Nemco.
